You May Need Mold Remediation If You Can Answer “Yes” to These Three Questions

8/6/2019 (Permalink)

In addition to causing significant property damage, mold can produce allergens and irritants that can cause health effects. SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom understand mold and mold growth and have the training and equipment to remediate the mold in your home or business.

Did you recently experience water damage? Mold can begin to grow in as little as 48 hours after your Fair Oaks / Folsom home or business experiences water damage. This is why it is so important to begin mitigation and remediation as soon as possible. If the leak has gone unnoticed for awhile, you may be looking at a larger mold infestation. However, you don’t necessarily need to have experienced water damage for mold to start growing in your home. Humid or damp conditions along with stagnant air will likely lead to the growth of mold colonies as well.

Is there a musty odor? Have you ever left laundry in the washing machine so long that it smells a little funky once you finally take it out? The same smell may be coming from mold growing in your house. Again, if your home wasn’t recently affected by water damage, the likely cause is a humid or damp environment, which the mold thrives in.

Have you noticed any discoloration? Most molds cause the organic material the mold is consuming to change colors. Whether the food source for the mold is human food or drywall paper, if colonization is allowed for enough time, there will usually be a discoloration that will reveal a mold problem. Most molds, when allowed to grow in abundance, are visibly seen in certain colors. Mold is not only black. Many species are visible in gray, white, brown, red and even some hues of pastel colors. Some molds look like dust, or fuzz, while others look like sand granules. Certain molds thrive on certain food sources, and they all require different moisture content or relative humidity in the ambient air.

Note: Water seeping through masonry sometimes causes a white crystalline, powder-like discoloration called “efflorescence”. This substance is made up of minerals and should not be confused with mold.

If you can answer "yes" to these three questions, you may be in need of mold remediation services. SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom is here to help - give us a call! (916) 987-0400.
