What Water Can Do To Your Home

6/14/2023 (Permalink)

Left untreated, the moisture and bacteria from a sewage loss may cause microbial growth.  SERVPRO has experience with remediating a loss in which sewage was left untreated, causing mold to form on the drywall and floor. In such an instance, all flooring, drywall, doors and trim must be removed. Dehumidifiers are placed and remaining stud beams, subfloor, and stationary objects are cleaned and sanitized. A special antimicrobial solution can be painted to the affected areas to prevent mold from reforming on the treated surfaces. This is usually the most important step in the mold remediation process.

In an effort to prevent the timely remediation of mold, a sewage loss must be mitigated immediately. Our team of SERVPRO professionals are trained to extract and clean the discharge from the area before placing drying equipment to remove any remaining moisture. Faster to any disaster, SERVPRO is always ready to take on even the largest sewage losses.

Being Swimming Pool Ready!

6/2/2023 (Permalink)

What is the best way to keep my child safe around swimming pools?

An adult should actively watch children at all times while they are in a pool. For infants and toddlers, an adult should be in the water and within arm’s reach, providing “touch supervision.”  For older children, an adult should be paying constant attention and free from distractions, like talking on the phone, socializing, tending household chores, or drinking alcohol. The supervising adult must know how to swim.

Pool Rules

If you have a pool, insist that the following rules are followed:

  • Keep toys away from the pool when the pool is not in use.
  • Empty blow-up pools after each use.
  • No tricycles or other riding toys at poolside.
  • No electrical appliances near the pool.
  • No diving in a pool that is not deep enough.
  • No running on the pool deck.

Pool Fences

Children can climb out a window, through a doggy door, or sneak out a door to get to the back yard and the pool. To prevent small children from entering the pool area on their own, there should be a fence that completely surrounds the pool or spa. Combined with the watchful eyes of an adult, a fence is the best way to protect your child and other children who may visit or live nearby.

Pool fences should also:

  • Be climb-resistant and should not have anything alongside it (such as lawn furniture) that can be used to climb it.
  • Be at least 4 feet high and have no footholds or handholds that could help a child climb it.
  • Have no more than 4 inches between vertical slats. Chain-link fences are very easy to climb and are not recommended as pool fences. If they must be used, the diamond shape should not be bigger than 1¾ inches.
  • Have a gate that is well maintained and is self-closing and self-latching. It should only open away from the pool. The latches should be higher than a child can reach – 54 inches from the bottom of the gate.
  • For above-ground pools always keep children away from steps or ladders. When the pool is not in use, lock or remove the ladders to prevent access by children.

Other protection products, when used with an “isolation” fence, may be of some benefit; however, these are not substitutes for adequate fencing. These may include the following:

  • Automatic pool covers (motorized covers operated by a switch). Pool covers should cover the entire pool so that a child can't slip under them. Make sure there is no standing water on top of the pool cover. Be aware that floating solar covers are not safety covers.
  • Door alarms
  • Doors to the house that are self-closing/self-latching
  • Window guards
  • Pool alarms

Swimming Lessons - Where We Stand

Children need to learn to swim. The AAP supports swimming lessons for most children 4 years and older, and for children 1 to 4 years of age who are ready to learn how to swim. Keep in mind that because children develop at different rates, each child will be ready to swim at her own time.

Some factors you may consider before starting swimming lessons for younger children include:

  • Frequency of exposure to water
  • Emotional maturity
  • Physical limitations
  • Health concerns related to swimming pools (for example, swallowing water, infections, pool chemicals)

While some swim programs claim to teach water survival skills to children less than 12 months old, evidence does not show that they are effective in preventing drowning. Swim lessons do not provide “drown-proofing” for children of any age, so supervision and other layers of protection are necessary even for children who have learned swimming skills.

Diving Safety

Serious spinal cord injuries, permanent brain damage, and death can occur to swimmers who dive into shallow water or spring upward on the diving board and hit it on the way down.

Keep safe by following these simple common-sense diving rules.

  • Check how deep the water is. Enter the water feet first, especially when going in for the first time.
  • Never dive into above-ground pools; they are usually not deep enough.
  • Never dive into the shallow end of a pool.
  • Never dive through inner tubes or other pool toys.
  • Learn how to dive properly by taking classes.

Water Damage Tips For Your Home

Tips to Prepare for Water Damage

  1. Look up your insurance coverage. Most renter’s or homeowners insurance policies don’t cover flooding, or even a sewer backup. Find out what coverage you have.
  2. Keep a record of all of your belongings. Take photos and keep copies of a receipt or other documents for the more valuable items. Store a copy of these records online or at another location. If you do experience water damage, it can be easy to forget about certain items.
  3. Take steps to limit the risk of water damage within your home by checking pipes frequently and paying attention to any indicators of water damage, such as dripping sounds in the walls, dark spots on the ceiling, or significant change in your water bill.
  4. Set up your home so that it is less at risk of damage from heavy rains or flooding by ensuring that your roof is sound. Make sure there are no cracks in the foundation. Check that the landscaping around your home is sloped to direct water away from your foundation, rather than toward it.
  5. Find an expert you can count on. Water damage can be overwhelming, and you don’t want to be desperately searching for a water restoration expert at 3 AM when the pipes break. SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom is here to take care of you – call 916-987-0400.

Proper Cleanup

12/29/2022 (Permalink)

Are you aware of the proper disposal of contaminated needles and blood tube holders? From the OSHA website

Appropriate Disposal of Contaminated Sharps:

  • Employers must make available, closable, puncture resistant, leakproof sharps containers that are appropriately labeled and color-coded. The containers must also have an opening that is large enough to accommodate disposal of the entire blood collection assembly (i.e. blood tube holder and needle).
  • Employees must have access to sharps containers that are easily accessible to the immediate area where sharps are used (29 CFR 1910.1030(d)(4)(iii)(A)(2)(i)).
  • If employees travel from one location to another (e.g. from one patient room to another or from one facility to another), the employee must be provided with a sharps container which is conveniently placed or portable at each location/facility, and is capable of accommodating the entire blood tube holder and needle assembly.

Note: Many sharps containers are designed with openings that do not allow for disposal of a SESIP that is attached to the blood tube holder. These containers would not be in compliance with the bloodborne pathogens standard. Employers must ensure that where blood is being drawn, the sharps container is appropriate for immediate disposal of sharps.

Evaluation Toolbox

  • Employers must first evaluate, select, and use appropriate engineering controls (e.g., sharps with engineered sharps injury protection), which includes single-use blood tube holders with sharps with engineered sharps injury protection (SESIP) attached.
  • The use of engineering andwork practice controls provide the highest degree of control in order to eliminate potential injuries after performing blood draws. Disposing of blood tube holders with contaminated needles attached after the activation of the safety feature affords the greatest hazard control.
  • In very rare situations needle removal is acceptable.
    • If the employer can demonstrate that no feasible alternative to needle removal is available (e.g. inability to purchase single-use blood tube holders due to a supply shortage of these devices),
    • If the removal is necessary for a specific medical or dental procedure.

In these rare cases, the employer must ensure that the contaminated needle is protected by a SESIP prior to disposal. In addition, the employer must ensure that a proper sharps disposal container is located in the immediate area of sharps use and is easily accessible to employees. This information must be clearly detailed and documented in the employer's Exposure Control Plan.

  • If it is necessary to draw blood with a syringe, a syringe with engineered sharps injury protection must be used in which the protected needle is removed using safe work practices, and transfer of blood from the syringe to the tube must be done using a needleless blood transfer device.

Categories Of Different Types of Water Contamination

10/31/2022 (Permalink)

There are three basic categories of water damage, based on the level of contamination.

Category 1 Water - Refers to a source of water that does not pose substantial threat to humans and classified as "clean water". Examples are broken water supply lines, tub or sink overflows or appliance malfunctions that involves water supply lines.

Category 2 Water - Refers to a source of water that contains a significant degree of chemical, biological or physical contaminated and causes discomfort or sickness when consumed or even exposed to. Known as "grey water". This type carries microorganism and nutrient of micro-organisms. Examples are toilet bowls with urine (no feces), sump pump failures, seepage due to hydrostatic failure and water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines.

Category 3 Water - Known as "black water" and is grossly unsanitary. This water contains unsanitary agents, harmful bacteria and fungi, causing severe discomfort or sickness. Type 3 category are contaminated water sources that affect the indoor environment. This category includes water sources from sewage, seawater, rising water from rivers or streams, storm surge, ground surface water or standing water. Category 2 Water or Grey Water that is not promptly removed from the structure and or have remained stagnant may be re classified as Category 3 Water. Toilet back flows that originates from beyond the toilet trap is considered black water contamination regardless of visible content or color.

Maintenance With HVAC

9/14/2022 (Permalink)

Regular HVAC Maintenance: Water, steam and air flow metering and monitoring can measure HVAC system efficiency and identify “leaky” valves or other potential system inefficiencies.
2. Damper and Actuator Maintenance: When working properly, dampers and actuators enable free cooling controls/programs to do their job. Maintenance performed every 3-6 months can cause a 5 ton compressor to operate only 20 hours less, energy savings can equate to $0.10 per kWh.
3. Heat Exchange Coil Cleanliness: Dirty condenser and evaporator coils reduce cooling capacity and make compressors work harder. Supply and return air temperature measurements with outdoor air resets is one of the most cost-effective maintenance steps that can be done on HVAC systems.
4. Demand-controlled Ventilation: Too little outside air is a health concern … too much is an energy waster. Using a CO2 sensor and controller helps you get it just right.

Fire Safety For Summer

SERVPRO would like for you to enjoy your summer, and to remember that enjoying the Summer means paying attention to the special safety concerns associated with summertime activities.

Have FUN by being SAFE!

  • Keep grills at least 10 feet from any structure.  Grilling mishaps cause more than 8,300 fires and send 3,000 people to the emergency room each year.
  • Never grill indoors or near garages or porches, even if it's raining.
  • Never leave the grill unattended, especially when young children or pets are nearby.
  • Never use gasoline or kerosene to light a charcoal fire.  Both can cause an explosion.
  • When grilling, use insulated, flame retardant mitts and long handled barbeque tongs and utensils to handle food and coals.
  • Let coals/ash cool in the grill for at least 24 hours before disposing of them.  Never empty hot/warm coals into a garbage receptacle, and especially not into a plastic receptacle.

What's Considered Cat 2 Loss?

7/13/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage and a flooded home is one of the most challenging emergencies that home owners are forced to address. When flood damage has occurred, it is advisable to involve professionals in the water cleanup and restoration process because there is usually a risk of injury associated with the mitigation process. Other risks include compromising the strength of the building if the drying process is not handled properly and losses that will be incurred a few months down the line trying to deal with emergent issues such as mold growth after there has been water in home. When the flood damage is caused by a pipe break of a supply line break, mitigation is typically simple, however, when it is cause by sewer lines, the risk increases further. Here are a few things you should understand about Category 2 water damage and the mitigation process.

Category 2 water loss is also known as gray water in homes. It is water which contains a certain level of the chemical, physical or biological containment. This water in home can cause problems such as physical discomfort on the skin and sickness when one is exposed to it, or when consumed. The common sources of this type of water include toilet bowls containing urine, water from dishwashers, and flood damage from the failure of sump pumps. Water cleanup professionals always recommended that everyone inside a flooded home with Category 2 water loss to leave immediately and a company to be called in to resolve the matter.

Procedures that are followed in water damage restoration

As mentioned, you need to contact professionals as soon as you notice there is flood damage of any kind in the building that you occupy. The first thing to do when they arrive is getting the proper work contracts and authorizations to handle the process. The restoration company will get to work on the flooded home as soon as you give the green light. The experts first survey the building and identify any safety hazards present. These include things like electrical wires that could be hanging in the water, dry walls that have become loose and related issues. The flooded home restoration company will then try to locate the source of the water loss and start the water cleanup process. Common sources are a pipe break or a supply line break.

When the pipe break, supply line break or other source of water in home or water in business has been located, the restoration company does their best to protect your furniture by blocking. If there are small items, they will be moved out of the affected region. If the water got to surfaces which are carpeted, the restoration company uses a sub-surface extraction tool for water cleanup. Other tools that the water damage restoration companies use for the suction work include vacuums and special suction and water extraction pumps.

The drying part of the flooded home follows. To achieve the desired drying effect, all the dehumidifiers are turned on and left on until a new dew point temperature is reached. Experts are cautious about the drying process because when done improperly, issues such as mold will result later. After the drying, a biocide will be applied to all the affected surfaces to eliminate or retard the growth of all types of microbial life. If there are any structures which are non-dryable and they got wet during the damage, the water damage restoration company will remove and replace them.

Other measures that are taken by mitigation companies include installation of air movers and use of deodorizers to deal with the smell that is left behind by dirty water in business. The restoration process will be the last, where the water damage restoration company repaints any surface ruined in the restoration process, the replace the old carpets with new ones and replace dry walls. Issues such as a pipe break or a supply line break will also be repaired or replaced. As long as you have professionals working with you to remove contaminated water in business, the mitigation will be easy and hazard free.

Successful Water Restoration

7/1/2022 (Permalink)

A successfully water damage restoration always begins once the standing water has been removed - though it may not be visible in puddles.  Nevertheless, there are specific methods used for each and every situation.

Mold colonies quickly form whenever there is excess moisture or even humidity in a home. The spores that cause mold growth are microscopic and natural occurring, and apart from moisture, they require an organic food source, oxygen and the right temperature to thrive. Because of the environment, a mold problem can keep recurring even after remediation, which is not only costly but also inconveniencing so finding ways to get long-term results from a remediation exercise is essential.

Most exercises of mold remediation in Fair Oaks / Folsom happen after incidents of water loss because such events supply the necessary moisture for growth. Leaks that can go unnoticed, especially in hidden sections of the property, can also lead to infestations. Such leaks are common in plumbing lines within wall cavities and beneath sinks or bathtubs. Addressing the source of the water helps prevent recurrence. Our SERVPRO technicians will take measures to quickly bring down relative humidity levels below 60 percent after a water loss incident to prevent growth. Fixing small leaks and drying wet materials using dehumidifiers and air movers helps deal with the issue “Like it never even happened.”

If you are facing a lingering mold problem, call SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom at (916) 987-0400. We’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We’re faster to any size disaster.

Hiring A Professional?

12/7/2021 (Permalink)

Homeowners shouldn’t be exclusively on the alert for flash floods. There are many household problems that can cause water damage. Some destruction results from lack of proper maintenance. The most common causes of household water damage include:

  • Roof leaks
  • Foundation cracks
  • Clogged gutters
  • Defective appliances
  • Leaking and burst pipes
  • Backed-up drains
  • Overflowing sinks and toilets
  • Unsealed doors and windows

Visible water damage caused by a clogged sink or toilet, a leaky dishwasher, or an overflowing washing machine can be fairly quick and easy to repair. However, water damage caused by leaks in the attic or interior walls can often go undetected for years. Hidden leaks are much more likely to cause major structural damage that could cost thousands of dollars in repairs. They typically require professional water damage restoration services to get rid of rust stains, unwanted growth and foul odors that can remain in your home and create unsafe living conditions for you and your family.

Assessing Water Damage

Depending on the severity and amount of damage to your home, restoration may include several different services. When assessing destruction, there are three categories:

  • Category One –This damage occurs from clean water that doesn’t pose health risks to humans. Possible causes may include leaking pipes, overflowing sinks, and damaged appliances.
  • Category Two – Gray water damage indicates possible contamination and could cause illness to humans. The contamination could be a result of broken or overflowing toilets or defective sump pumps.
  • Category Three – Blackwater damage is the most severe, and refers to unsanitary hazards like bacteria or organisms that cause health effects. Likely sources include contaminated standing water and sewage spills.

Water damage also falls into several classes to help determine the level of destruction to the home.

  • Class One – This is the easiest type of cleanup because materials have not absorbed much liquid and damage is minimal.
  • Class Two – This class of cleanup is more difficult. Carpeting, upholstery and other soft surfaces have absorbed water and need to be thoroughly dried.
  • Class Three – Cleanup in this class often addresses large amounts of water that have drenched interior walls, furnishings, and materials.
  • Class Four – The extent of this damage usually always requires special restoration services due to structural compromises.

Why Should I Hire a Professional?

When your home has been damaged by water, restoration specialists can help you save cherished belongings and return your home to a safe, livable condition. Professional restoration companies like SERVPRO specialize in cleanup from water damage and have the experience and expertise to transform your home to pristine condition. SERVPRO professionals use high-tech equipment and proper cleanup procedures that provide fast and efficient results.

Services include:

  • Assessment of water damage
  • Removal of furniture and interior items
  • Water removal/extraction
  • Drying and dehumidification
  • Cleaning and Sanitizing
  • Restoration

Water removal and extraction are essential to prevent dangerous unwanted growth and secondary damage. Restoration contractors have professional, commercial-grade equipment such as water-extraction pumps, moisture meters, fans, blowers and dehumidifiers that aren’t available to most homeowners. Truck-mounted vacuum systems provide powerful suction, quickly removing hundreds or even thousands of gallons of water from your property. If there’s standing water, technicians use powerful submersible pumps. Both types of equipment provide fast drying times, minimizing costly repairs and mitigating hazardous conditions.

After water removal, the floors, walls, ceilings, cabinets, furnishings and personal items will need a thorough cleaning, especially if the water was contaminated or remained stagnant for a period of time. Sanitizing treatments help kill harmful bacteria, as well as remove odors from the incident. If items in your home can’t be safely cleaned and sanitized, SERVPRO restoration professionals will remove and safely dispose of damaged materials.

What Professionals Encounter With A CAT 2 Water Loss

12/6/2021 (Permalink)

Don't Let Sludge Turn To Mold

11/19/2021 (Permalink)

Routine for checking water damage

10/22/2021 (Permalink)

There are many ways in which a house can develop issues, but one of the most detrimental things for homeowners is hidden water damage. Not only will there be problems with water spots, mold and more because of it, but it can also lead to structural problems in the home’s walls depending on what parts are effective.

Thankfully, there are many things you can look for to check for water damage in the home as part of your regular home maintenance routines. This can help you catch any issues before they become too serious and has the added benefit of not being as expensive of a claim on your insurance.

How to Check for Water Damage Around Your Home

Inspect your walls and ceilings. Walls tend to hide leaks rather well, but if you look closely at your drywall, you can often find evidence that they are there. Small things like discolored areas, paint that is peeling or soft spots might be indicative of a hidden leak that you should have a professional check out ASAP.

Don’t forget to look down. If water damage is present, it can gradually work its way down and get into the floor of your home, soaking into the subfloor and causing problems. If you notice any soft spots or buckling of your floor, it might be a sign that the subfloor has become saturated with moisture.

Inspect your roof. Your roof is your home’s best defense against water damage, so it is wise to check on it often. You can inspect it easily from the ground with binoculars to look for loose shingles or other signs of wear. You can also go out during the next rain shower to make sure your gutters are properly functioning and keeping water away from your foundation.

Pay close attention to the basement. Basements are not supposed to be the damp and musty places they have been given the reputation of being—in fact, they should not be. Check your basement often for signs of moisture and mold, and if you do notice any issues, be sure to have a professional check it out right away.

When Sump Pumps Don’t Work No More-9023

Sump pumps are drainage systems that are commonly found in the basements of commercial buildings. They work to pump water out of the basement and away from the building, preventing flooding and water damage. A sump pump failure can lead to a flooded basement and cause water damage to furniture, essential materials, and other important objects, which could prove costly. Understanding why sump pumps fail is the first step in preventing a sump pump failure in your commercial building.

Causes
Power outages are one of the most common causes of sump pump failures, especially during the stormy summer months and hurricane season. Storms can dump large amounts of rain water for the sump pump to drain, but a power failure that prevents the sump pump from doing its job can leave your building defenseless and at risk for flooding. To prevent disaster, consider having your sump pump hooked up to a backup generator.
Sump pumps require regular cleaning in order to function properly, so infrequent maintenance can have serious consequences. To keep your sump pump from failing, clean its vents and run a vinegar solution through the unit.
Lastly, your sump pump might fail simply because it’s old. Over time, sump pumps will start to feel the effects of usage and therefore, failure is inevitable after 7-10 years. It’s recommended that your sump pump be replaced after 10 years in order to protect your building from a sump pump failure.

If your commercial building’s sump pump has failed, resulting in water damage, remember that SERVPRO has you covered. We’re trained in flood and water damage and will use our trusted, advanced drying techniques to prevent mold and mildew growth, rapidly restoring any water damaged areas. Don’t hesitate.

Let’s Flush That Water Heater

9/10/2021 (Permalink)

Much like any other appliance in your Fair Oaks or Folsom home, your water heater requires routine maintenance in order to continue functioning properly. Performing regular maintenance, such as a simple flush, can help keep your appliance running smoothly for years to come. The good news is that this process is quite simple to execute, even if you lack prior plumbing experience.

  1. Turn Off the Machine.
This process varies depending on which type of model your home is equipped with. For gas models, simply cut the gas and extinguish the pilot light. Electric models can be switched off via your home's circuit box.

  2. Empty and Flush the Tank.
Open your device's drain valve and allow the water to flow freely for several minutes, until the tank is completely drained. You can switch on the faucet in your kitchen sink to help the water drain more smoothly and efficiently. Wait a few minutes before turning off the supply valve. Switch the supply valve back on once the water flow ceases entirely. Flush the water heater quickly before cutting the supply once again.

  3. Refill the Water Tank.
Once you feel satisfied that all of the water and debris left in the tank has been drained, you may close the valve. Switch the water supply back on and closely watch the flowing faucet in your kitchen sink. The stream will start flowing smoothly again once the water tank is completely full.

  4. Reactivate the Power.
After the tank has been refilled, you can switch the power on. Do so by repeating step one in reverse order. Double-check to make sure the water tank has been filled completely before restoring the power. Doing so with a half-full tank can damage your appliance. Your water heater flush is now complete.
Performing a successful flush on your water heater is a simple way to help maintain a crucial appliance in your home. Make sure to contact water remediation experts for assistance if you encounter any problems during your flush.

Places That Water Damage Can Hide

7/7/2021 (Permalink)

Sustaining water damage is an unpredictable and inconvenient life event. An area prone to flooding might be more prepared, but flooding is far from the only thing that causes water damage.

Inconvenience aside, water damage is also costly. The typical insurance claim for water damage amounts to over $6,500, but insurance will often not accept water damage claims at all. Checking the common places water damage can hide is a wise practice for homeowners so they are not surprised later on.

Places That Water Damage Can Hide

  • Under a sink. Because the area under the sink is hidden, it is easy to be unaware that there is a leak until there is a big problem. Check regularly for water buildup and mold.
  • Around a tub. The caulk that seals a bathtub to the wall can become worn over time, allowing water to seep in.
  • Under drywall. Drywall can hide severe water damage within the walls, which is especially common after flooding or a burst pipe.
  • At roof intersections. Chimneys and exhaust fans that intersect with the roof should be checked regularly for leakage around their seals.
  • In an HVAC unit. The air conditioning system’s drain line can become clogged, leading to water buildup within the unit.
  • Behind appliances. Washing machines and dishwashers can have leaks that remain hidden for an extended period of time because they are in hidden areas.
  • At an exterior faucet. Where an exterior faucet is connected to the water pipe is a prime spot for leaks to develop and is often hidden by siding.

Protecting Your Commercial Building From Water Leaks

6/10/2021 (Permalink)

Undetected water leaks can cause a great amount of damage, especially if they continue for an extended period of time.  Here are a few of the most common types of leaks in commercial properties and how to fix them.

  • Faucet Leaks – With frequent use, faucet parts can wear out over time and when the seal or other components begin to leak, it can lead to water loss. This can substantially increase your water bill as well as cause major damage to your building.  In order to avoid loss, prepare any dripping sinks as soon as you see them start to leak.
  • Toilet Leaks – Like faucets, toilets have a number of parts that can deteriorate and lead to issues. One faulty or leaking part leads to other damage, so be sure to replace toilet components as soon as you see them begin to deteriorate.
  • Underground Leaks – These types of leaks can often go undetected, but there are tell-tail signs of their existence, such as areas of wet soil, areas where grass or plants are growing faster than surrounding areas (due to increased water supply from your leak), and a significant rise in your water bill.
  • Hidden Leaks – These types of leaks are the most difficult to detect, but can cause the most damage because they remain undetected for long periods of time. If you notice water marks or swelling of walls, ceilings and floors, you likely have a hidden leak.

If any of these types of leaks are detected in your commercial building, call the professionals at SERVPRO.

Water Categories Based on The Level of Contamination

5/18/2021 (Permalink)

Water Water

ANSI/IICRC Standards For Water Damage

4/30/2021 (Permalink)

water damage water damage

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) set a standard and reference guide for water damage restoration that we at SERVPRO of Lodi follow.

This guide, known as the S500, provides a specific set of practical standards for water damage restoration. It is based on reliable restoration principles, research and practical experience.

There are 3 categories of water and 4 classifications of water damage.

The 3 Basic Categories of Water:

Category 1 originates from a sanitary source and poses no substantial risk from dermal, ingestion, or inhalation exposure. However, it may not always remain clean after it comes into contact with other surfaces or materials.

Category 2 contains significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed by humans. It may contain potentially unsafe levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms, as well as other organic or inorganic matter (chemical or biological).

Category 3 is grossly contaminated and may contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. Such water sources may carry silt, organic matter, pesticides, heavy metals, regulated materials, or toxic organic substances.

Time and temperature can also affect the quality of water, thereby changing its category.

*Refer to the IICRC S500 for complete definitions.

The 4 Primary Classifications of Water Damage:

Class 1 is the least amount of water, absorption and evaporation.  It affects only part of a room or area, or larger areas containing materials that have absorbed minimal moisture.  Little or no wet carpet and/or cushion is present.

Class 2 involves a large amount of water, absorption and evaporation.  It affects at least an entire room of carpet and cushion (pad).  Water has wicked up walls less than 24 inches.  There is moisture remaining in structural materials and substructure soil.

Class 3 involves the greatest amount of water, absorption and evaporation.  Water may have come from overhead.  Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushion and subfloor in virtually all of the entire area are saturated.

Class 4 relates to specialty drying situations.  Wet materials with very low permeance/porosity (eg. hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, light-weight concrete and stone).  Typically, there are deep pockets of saturation, which require very low specific humidity.  These types of losses may require longer drying times and special methods.

*Refer to the IICRC S500 for complete definitions.

It is Possible to Save Flooring in Your Home That Has Been Affected by Big Water Leaks?

1/11/2021 (Permalink)

It is Possible to Save Flooring in Your Home That Has Been Affected by Big Water Leaks?

Whenever a pipe in your home ruptures, your floors are often suddenly covered in inches or even feet of water, and water can quickly inundate your carpeting, wooden floors, tilework, and subfloors. Experts estimate that this catastrophic issue could result in more than 160 gallons of water per hour leaking into your residence. In a matter of hours, this could rapidly produce thousands of gallons of standing water in your home. Luckily, trained professionals can quickly remediate clean water damage if you call them soon enough. Water cleanup services like SERVPRO can help and save most kinds of floors.

How Does Water Damage My Carpets, Wooden and Hard Floors, and Subfloors?

SERVPRO has encountered various types of water damage affecting flooring. Our experience with water damage has ranged from relatively minor in effect to quite severe. Of course, each flooring material handles water exposure differently, and some react to it better than others. Some of the forms of water-related damage that affect carpeting are:

  • Bubbling from water washing away the adhesive that binds it to the subfloor
  • Delamination, or when the primary and secondary backing layers of carpeting separate
  • Latex deterioration that leads to the loss of carpet fibers and reduces carpeting’s overall integrity

Although these effects can force you to replace this floor covering, you can usually avoid experiencing them if you address your standing water issue quickly.

Water’s impact on wooden flooring often depends on the construction, but the damage is usually more severe and costly. Moreover, it does not take long for these effects to result. A few examples of wood floor impairments due to water exposure are:

  • Water stains or discoloration
  • Swelling and warping, or deformation, of the wood
  • Buckling that tents, or forces upward, floor sections at joints where they meet and at the walls
  • Delamination of particleboard or oriented strand board (OSB) layers
  • Dry rot resulting from fungal growths

If water ever covers your wood flooring, remember that the faster cleaning occurs, the less damage it usually does. The longer the liquid remains on floors, the more their wooden surfaces absorb. The water causes the wood segments of your flooring to change shape and eventually buckle against each other—also, ground coverings comprising weaker wood products like particleboard and OSB. Glued-together layers, which are more likely to delaminate, the more prolonged exposure to water occurs, compose these boards.

Hard flooring, like concrete, asphalt or vinyl tiles, and ceramic tiles, is much more resilient to water damage than carpet or wood floors. Often, it is also much simpler and less expensive to remediate. With that said, however, these ground coverings are harmed by water in the following ways:

  • Blistering or flaking of painted concrete surfaces
  • Mineral deposits from evaporated water in concrete
  • Mold growth fostered by dirty, wet surfaces
  • Separation of vinyl and ceramic tiles from the floor
  • Warping and expansion of subflooring

Concrete and asphalt tile floors are least at risk of substantial water damage. Concrete floors mostly suffer minor surface cosmetic issues like paint flaking and calcium deposits. Often, water can only remove the finish from asphalt tiles. Since the adhesive of vinyl tiles dissolves relatively quickly, the tiles themselves are prone to separating from flooring if submerged for a sufficient period. Water can penetrate the grouting between ceramic tiles, causing the subflooring to swell and warp and break away from the floor.

What Can SERVPRO Do to Save Your Flooring?

When dealing with water-damaged flooring, SERVPRO employs various advanced tools and methods. Once our technicians extract all standing water with truck-mounted/portable extractors or wet vacs, they get to work on remediating your floors. Some of the tools and techniques they use to do the latter are:

  • Wands using hot water extraction and shampoo to clean and extract excess water from glued-down carpets
  • Heavier extraction devices to squeeze excess water out of thicker carpeting and padding
  • Moisture meters that identify and measure moisture levels in affected flooring and subflooring
  • Injectidry panel drying systems that dry out subflooring
  • Sanders to sand out cupping and other forms of warping in wood surfaces
  • Brushes and HEPA vacuuming to clean concrete surfaces

Flooding

12/10/2020 (Permalink)

All kinds of things can be found in standing water such as animal waste, rotted plants, downed power lines, household waste, sewage and even wild animals. If the water damage is inside your home, immediately turn off the electricity to your home and watch for any sources that might be contributing to accumulating debris, especially in bathrooms and kitchens.

To help reduce your risk to certain hazards associated with floods, SERVPRO suggests:

  • Don’t drive in flooded areas
  • Stay out of floodwater to prevent yourself from getting sick.
  • If you come into contact with floodwater,
  • Wash the area with soap and water as soon as you can
  • Use alcohol-based wipes or sanitizer
  • Wash clothes in hot water and detergent
  • If you must enter floodwater, try to protect yourself by wearing rubber boots and gloves
  • Be wary of sharp objects in floodwater.
  • If you are wounded, see a medical professional to determine whether or not you might need a tetanus booster
  • Do not eat or drink anything contaminated by floodwater
  • Do not let children play in floodwater

Floors Were Saved After A Water Loss

12/8/2020 (Permalink)

When this 3 story Rumson home was flooded, the insurance agent said he did not think we could save the floors. He was very surprised when we saved the wood floor without needing the homeowner to move out for demolition. The insurance company and the homeowner were thrilled with the work our team did.

Upon arrival to the home, our technicians inspected the flooring to see if it could be salvaged. Since the wood floor was not showing an extremely high moisture content, the technicians decided to use the Injector system in an attempt to save it from removal.

The Injector system works by utilizing extraction mats placed over wet sections of the wood floor. The mats are connected to a special machine which directs air below the floor in an attempt to dry underneath it quickly. Dehumidifiers are often placed alongside the system to assist in removing as much moisture from the surrounding area as possible.

After the system ran for four days, the mats were removed to revel the wood had dried exceptionally well and would not need to be replaced! The homeowner was so overjoyed to hear we were able to save the flooring. The Injector system is an innovative tool often used by our franchise to alleviate costly, time-consuming repairs for our customers.

Our Experienced Team Can Help You

10/29/2020 (Permalink)

As amazing as innovative tools are, it takes a crew of seasoned and highly-qualified technicians to use them to the best effect. Professional water remediation companies deliver their best outcomes when the workers pledge to train and recertify on a regular basis.

When you face water damage in your home, you benefit from cutting-edge equipment and crews who know how to operate them according to industry standards. Even diehard do-it-yourselfers recognize that managing water incursions is a tricky business, requiring not only hard work but also a solid understanding of the science behind water removal and structural drying.

Developing professional expertise to mitigate water damage is why SERVPRO sends our crew members to the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) classes. The IICRC is a standard developing and establishing organization worldwide. Skills taught to the employees we sent to remediate and restore your home base their effectiveness on research.

An example of a task that might seem straightforward enough to be within the grasp of every homeowner is carpet water extraction. The equipment resembles a shop vac, and a homeowner typically feels comfortable operating a vacuum. Why SERVPRO requires crew members to complete a comprehensive IICRC course in carpet cleaning relates to the problems that can occur if standards are unknown or ignored.

The art and science of extracting water from carpeting or other floor coverings are not intuitive. An effective way to pull moisture out of a carpet is with a weighted wand extractor. SERVPRO IICRC-trained technicians learned and practiced the techniques that extract moisture without putting stress on the textile floor covering. Inexperienced individuals can stretch the carpet fabric by exerting too much pressure or moving too quickly across a surface. Inappropriate force might cause delamination of the carpet backing from the carpet face.

Preventing AC Leaks While Attempting to Stay Cool

6/3/2020 (Permalink)

Summer is officially here and that means 100-degree weather if you live in California and air conditions running all day and night in an attempt to stay cool. While running our air conditions no-stop most people tend to forget that air conditioners can sometimes cause a water damage if not properly maintained. An air conditioning system can collect 10 to 20 gallons of water daily when working at peak efficiency. Normally the water will drain off the condensation coil into a collection pan and then is disposed of automatically into the sewer system but if the drain becomes clogged and the unit produces more water than it can handle, the water will overflow and can lead to damaged floors and carpeting. If not detected it can also cause mold growth.

Although a clogged drain line is often the major source of creating water damage there are other causes such as excessive condensation that occurs when the unit is running round the clock in addition to evaporator coils that may freeze up and then defrost on a regular basis. Because most of the unit is typically hidden from view water damage can be occurring daily and accumulating into hundreds of dollars’ worth of damage.

  1. Make sure to change the air filter every month. By changing the air filter monthly, it gives you the opportunity to check whether there is excessive moisture collecting on the condensation line. Making sure that the AC unit has clean air filters also helps prevent the unit from overworking and causing freezing and then defrosting on the evaporator coils, leading to water damage.
  2. It is important to regularly check to see that water is indeed flowing from the opening of the condensation line directly to the drain as it was designed to do, especially during periods of very high humidity in the atmosphere.
  3. When installing an AC condensation line, avoid using elbow connections if possible and have the line run in as straight an up and down direction as possible to facilitate water removal from the unit.
  4. Consider having a professional air conditioning repair service to clean the condensation line at least once a year or every six months if the AC system is used on a year-round basis. A professional plumbing service can also install a condensation pump to help ensure the free flow of excess water into the proper disposal drain. A repair technician may recommend installing a device known as a safety float switch which will automatically shut down the power to an AC unit whenever condensation builds up and there is a danger of water overflow.

By following the four steps listed, you can help reduce the chances of water damage. If a water damage does occur SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom is ready to help get your home or business dry. Call us at 916-987-0400.

Water Damage Restoration: What You Need to Know

6/3/2020 (Permalink)

What Causes Water Damage?

  • Category Three – Blackwater damage is the most severe, and refers to unsanitary hazards like bacteria or organisms that cause illness or health problems for humans.

Swimming Pool Safety

6/2/2020 (Permalink)

Toilet Overflow? Do Not Delay, Call the Water Damage Experts

6/1/2020 (Permalink)

How do you know if the toilet that just overflowed will lead to a bigger problem? Only by professionally handling your specific situation based on the circumstances that it occurred will you know for certain. Was it a clean water overflow from the tank? Was it an overflow immediately after use and upon flushing it overflowed? If so, when the toilet was last used was fecal waste present? Because no amount of cleaning with bleach to disinfect the area afterwards will help. If bacteria was present in the water back up it will only be in the matter of hours that the bacteria will multiply and cause an awful odor of sewage throughout the inside of your home..

Was the overflow from an upstairs bathroom? Did water seep through the floors and is now inside the walls, ceiling and cabinets of the kitchen below? Are your belongings inside the cabinets now contaminated with sewage water?

Have several days passed since the initial leak occurred and now mold issues may be putting your family at risk? Is there a musty smell?

By calling out our SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom team you are relying on well trained and experienced technicians to mitigate the issue based on IICRC industry standards. This aids in avoiding secondary issues and assists in getting your home back to a safe and healthy environment. If mold is already present we can safely remove it in a professional mulit-step process where the remainder of the house can maintain fresh, breathable air due to our specialty equipment. How Professionals Deal with Category 2 Water Loss

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

How Water Loss Incidents Can Cause Future Mold Growth Issues

12/1/2019 (Permalink)

Mold! Mold! It’s Everywhere! So What?

10/22/2019 (Permalink)

Yes, Mold is Everywhere!

Mold is certainly a problem in many buildings, homes, apartments, condos, offices, factories, warehouses, public buildings. Yes, mold is everywhere. In case you didn’t know, it’s outdoors, as well as indoors. Essentially all molds indoors come from outdoors. The problem occurs when the outdoor mold levels-usually at a level most people can tolerate-finds an ideal growth environment indoors and begins to propagate to where it overwhelms our immune systems. Different molds thrive in different conditions but most like high humidity, warmth, and a food source (mostly wood, paper, foodstuffs, and plant matter).

Conditions for Mold Growth

Different molds like different conditions for propagation. Some thrive in high moisture; some prefer active water infusion. They also have a variety of diets and temperature requirements. Some like the cellulose in sheetrock paper, others like wood in various degrees of decay and water saturation. Some like very warm temperatures, others like lower temperatures. Very few, however, will grow in cool and cold temperatures; if they do it is very slow.

Adverse Effect on Humans

The important point with molds that may produce some type of adverse effect on humans is the quantity. The quantity on surfaces that can be dislodged by physical contact and air movement, and the quantity of mold, floating free in the air, that can be inhaled.

Do You Have a Plan For a Roof Leak?

9/12/2019 (Permalink)

Roof leaks are serious business. Not only can they cause immense damage to your roof, but they can also damage your home, lead to mold, flooding, and extremely expensive repair bills. So when you discover signs of a leak forming in your roof, you need to take action quickly to minimize the effect of the leak and prevent as much damage to your home as possible. However, many people don’t actually have a plan in place for the event they discover a leak. While most people know what to do in the event of a blizzard, fire, broken pipe, or so much more, not being prepared for this kind of a disaster could prove costly.

If you’re one of the many people who doesn’t have a plan in place for the event you discover a roof leak, then this blog is for you. Here are a few things you should have in your plan when you discover a roof leak so that you can better protect your home from potentially serious damage.

PROTECT THE INSIDE OF YOUR HOME

The first step to combating roof leak damage is to get everything out of the way which could suffer from water intruding into your home. This means moving all furniture, computers, electronics, and other possessions away from where the water is getting in. This may be hard work, but you simply have to get it out of where the water may be getting in. If you need to, just move things a little bit for now and then more once you have the situation under a greater degree of control.

FIND THE LEAK IN YOUR ATTIC

Once you’ve taken care of any immediate damage or loss threats in your home, it’s time to look for where the water is coming in. Just because the leak is in one point in your home doesn’t mean that’s where the water is getting in—it’s not uncommon for the signs of water damage to your ceiling and the actual source of the roof leak to not directly align. Head up into your attic and find where you’ve noticed the water damage in your ceiling, then look at the wood in your roof and see if you can spot the source of the water. Generally, a good place to look is along seams between boards, and directly up the slope of your roof. After a quick search, you should be able to find the source of the leak and then take action.

TEMPORARILY SEAL THE LEAK

There are a few temporary repairs you can do which may help you keep the leak at bay. Roofing cement is one option, as is roofer’s tape. Both of these materials can seal the gap, prevent water from getting through, and minimize the damage to just one small, localized area that’s easier to fix. This also helps prevent water from leaking into your home down below. Alternatively, you may also wish to tarp off the area impacted by the water drip, and even keep a bowl or bucket handy in case water sneaks through again. Ideally this won’t happen, but you want to be prepared just in case.

You can also temporarily seal a leak from the outside using a tarp. However, you shouldn’t do this if the rain is still falling, if thunder and lightning are present, and if your roof surface is still wet. Walking on the surface of your roof is already immensely dangerous, and doing so in high-slip conditions increases the risk of an injury exponentially. However, if you have an opportunity to cover the leak spot with a tarp, be sure to pull it as tight as possible, seal the highest point of the tarp with roofer’s tape to prevent water from continuing to leak through, and weigh the tarp down with something fairly heavy to prevent it from blowing away.

CALL FOR HELP

Once you’ve got the leak under control and stopped for the time being, reach out to a professional and get your issue fixed as soon as possible. When you’ve got a roof leak, letting it sit un-repaired usually only allows the damage to grow and get worse, and that means an even more expensive repair, or worse, a total replacement of your roof that could have otherwise been prevented.

Unseen Water Damage

8/29/2019 (Permalink)

Even small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality  issues  over time.

The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom has the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage expense during a fire or water loss. When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform. SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom will answer your call with fast action and a full arsenal of drying equipment. Here are a few of the tools used:

  • Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate readings, allowing SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals to monitor the drying process.
  • Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. When armed with this information, SERVPRO of Fair Oaks/ Folsom can calculate and create an environment most conclusive to drying.
  • When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but the structure must also be disinfected and often deodorized.
  • Ultra-Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. This device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach
  • Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based produces by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor causing particles.

What is the bottom line? SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom has the training and equipment to help make it "Like it never even happened." (916) 987-0400.

You May Need a New Water Heater If.....

8/28/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom receives an emergency call because a water heater has leaked and water is coming from the ceiling and all over the carpet, and the floor.  Here are some signs that you might need a new water heater and ways to check if you do. These may require a "look-see" from time to time while others become obvious only after things have gone wrong.

  • The water is not getting hot enough.
  • The water is not getting hot at all. It could be that the pilot light is out, or the circuit breaker has been tripped, or worse the whole heating system is shot.
  • The water is a rusty color or not clear running.
  • The water has a strange metallic taste, which could mean that the inside of the tank is breaking down.
  • The water heater is making loud popping and cracking noises that could mean the heating element is failing.
  • There are signs of leakage around the water heater which indicates a major internal failure to the system. Make sure that the electricity or gas has been turned off to the system and that before replacing it, the unit has had a chance to cool completely.

We suggest that you should hire a professional to replace and install your water heater to be certain that the installation meets safety codes and is safe to use.

3 Reasons Why DIY Mold Test Kits are a Bad Idea

8/14/2019 (Permalink)

Mold removal can be an expensive bill that no homeowner wants to take on. If there’s a way to cut costs, many are tempted to do it, and that’s often where DIY mold testing comes in. But while test kits are long on promises, they’re usually short on delivery. If you’re considering buying one to test your home or business, read these reasons test kits are a waste of time and money.

What Are Mold Kits

While there are many brands and variations, DIY mold test kits are all essentially petri dishes you set out for a while to figure out if mold is present. They claim to work in as little as five minutes, and help you bypass the need for

  • mold inspection
  • air sampling
  • repeat appointment

While DIY mold test kits purport to save money, however, there pitfalls are numerous.

No Visual Inspection

A big part test kits leave out is the mold inspection – critical to mold remediation. By themselves, mold samples can provide wrong answers. Only a visual inspection by an experienced mold testing and removal pro can detect subtle signs of a true mold problem and even find its source.

Inaccuracy

Mold test kits are known for being inaccurate not only due to user error, but because mold is all around us. A handful of spores, however, doesn’t mean a true problem – but a test kit by itself doesn’t know that. The result can be detecting a mold “problem” that doesn’t really exist or isn’t where you think it is.

Shipping and Handling

DIY kits must be mailed in for lab analysis, a daunting process that can damage the sample. Humidity, volatile temperatures and even shipping lag time can contribute to false results.

While they purport to save you money, in the end, DIY mold kits can actually cost you big if a mold problem is allowed to get out of hand. Call a professional mold testing company instead to put a hold on your mold.

Types of Water Damage

8/6/2019 (Permalink)

Understanding the different types of water damage can help expedite the process and ensure the appropriate cleanup measures are taken. The three main types of water damage are clean water, gray water, and black water, ranging from least to most dangerous respectively.

1. Clean water is the least harmful of the three and is usually caused by a broken pipe, outside leak, or water overflowing from an appliance.
2. Grey water is basically contaminated clean water and requires a few safety precautions to protect against any bacteria that may exist.
3. Black water is the most hazardous type of water damage and requires specific safety measures to protect clean-up crews. Water damage from black water is usually best handled by a professional cleaning service as the contaminants can range from bacterial disease, chemicals, and toxic materials.

Flood Preparedness and Response

8/6/2019 (Permalink)

Floods are among the most common weather hazards in the United States. They can happen anywhere at any time of year.

Densely populated areas have a higher risk for flash floods than rural areas. Flash floods can occur within minutes or hours of a heavy rainfall, and waters can rise as high as 30 feet or more. Even small streams and creeks can flood rapidly and cause damage. Flash floods are usually caused by slow-moving thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service, "Flash floods are short-term events occurring within six hours of the causative event (heavy rain, dam break, levee failure, rapid snowmelt and ice jams) and often within two hours of the start of high-intensity rainfall."

Flash floods can move homes and cars, uproot trees and destroy bridges. Because floods happen with little to no warning, residents in low-lying areas are particularly at risk. According to the American Red Cross, flash floods are the No. 1 weather-related killer in the U.S.

Almost half of all flash flood fatalities are vehicle related, according to the National Weather Service. If you're driving and approach a water-covered road, turn around. Just 6 inches of water can stall a vehicle, and 2 feet can float most cars, trucks and SUVs.

Here are some other tips to stay high and dry:

  • Know your proximity to rivers, streams and dams
  • During heavy rain, avoid underpasses, underground parking garages and basements
  • Avoid hiking or camping if thunderstorms are predicted
  • Develop an evacuation plan for your family
  • Don't walk in water above your ankles; you can be swept off your feet in as little as 6 inches of rushing water
  • Turn off the electricity and other utilities

State of the Art Equipment for Water Damages

8/1/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO knows that staying on the cutting edge of technology in our industry will help our customers the most. That's why we add new equipment to our inventory on a regular basis. We are proud to be able to offer the best to our customers.

Detection Equipment

Scoping damage involves our trained team members locating the areas affected by water and determining the extent to which the structure and contents have absorbed moisture. Our trained team member’s use:

  • Moisture Sensors – These are us to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and walls.
  • Moisture Meters – These are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate moisture readings that enable our SERVPRO® of Sumner County team member to monitor the drying process.
  • Thermo-hygrometers – These measure both temperature and relative humidity. In capturing these two readings our trained team members calculate specific humidity, dew point and vapor pressure.

Extraction Equipment

The most effective method of removing moisture from a structure is extraction. This is why it is crucial to respond quickly to a water damage and to provide emergency mitigation services. When the water is extracted quickly, the environment can usually be dried much faster.

  • Extractors – These are used in cleaning carpets and upholstery and in removing water from floors following a water damage. Extractors can either be truck-mounted or portable, allowing for greater access inside structures.

Air Moving Equipment

Air movers are used in water damage restoration to enhance evaporation at the surface level, thereby reducing drying time. As airflow at the surface level increases, the moisture in the air increases. This moisture is then eliminated via the use of dehumidification equipment.

Dehumidification Equipment

By extracting water vapor from the air, dehumidifiers lower the relative humidity, which in turn increases the rate of evaporation. In a water damaged, structure, dehumidifiers pull in the moist, humid air and then discharge dry, warm air. The dry air acts like a sponge, absorbing moisture from wet materials. SERVPRO® of Sumner County uses two types of dehumidifiers:

  • Refrigerant Dehumidifiers – These work similarly to an air conditioner.
  • Desiccant Dehumidifiers – The use chemicals, called desiccants, which readily absorb moisture from the air.

Water Damage Do's and Don'ts

8/1/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage from clean water is much different then contaminated sewer water.  These do's are only for clean water.  It is important to hire a professional to help you dry out your home after water damage.  With the right tools and pieces of equipment we can properly and safely dry out your home or business and the products within it.

Do's

  • Shut off the source of the water.
  • Turn off electricity
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and soaking up with towels.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture.
  • Put aluminum foil in between furniture legs and carpet.
  • Relocate all artwork and pictures to a safe, dry place.
  • Open all closet doors, furniture drawers, and luggage to help dry them out.

Don'ts

  • Enter a room with standing water. There could be a risk of electrical shock. Disconnect all power first.
  • Leave rugs and furniture upholstery wet against and sitting on carpets.  The fabrics could bleed between each other.
  • Turn on your television or any other electronic.
  • Do not use your household vacuum to try and suck up any water.  They are not made for this.
  • Do not try to clean up any sewage water yourself.
  • Do not lift up any carpeting that is tacked down.

Don’t Let Water Cause Long-Term Sheetrock Damage To Your Folsom Home

7/9/2019 (Permalink)

Drywall, plasterboard, wallboard, gypsum board, SheetrockTM, LAGYP, or GypRocTM.

Whatever you call it, it’s an important part of daily life. Yet, you never stop to think about it unless you have to, like if – heaven forbid – you experience a water leak.

Small leaks around pipes or drains are often ignored. Many homeowners and tenants feel that the water has the ability to evaporate faster than it can accumulate because there seems to be no or very little puddling under the leak.

If you own a home in Folsom, you should protect your property from this kind of water damage. Even though it may look like the water is evaporating at a rate that wouldn't allow harm to result, this is only because the water is most likely being absorbed by the materials closest to where the water drops are landing. If water is running down a vertical surface such as a wall, then this only adds to the damage sustained.

When water damage has not shown any signs, our technicians can use moisture meters to detect where elevated levels of moisture exist. SERVPRO professionals know where to look for water damage even when it is invisible. A wall may seem sound because of the way it looks while it is really damaged and in need of repair or replacement. SERVPRO professionals are here to help.

Remember, the absence of a wet surface in the presence of a small leak only means that the water is being hidden under the surface but still present. SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom can help you and your family by locating these types of leaks, and restoring the area, so no trace of water damage remains.

Call us at your earliest convenience, even in the middle of the night or during a holiday, at (916) 987-0400. We can handle your emergency

Need Tips for Preventing Moisture and Mold Prevention?

SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom is here to help with all of your water, fire, mold, storm, and commercial needs. If you’ve found something that looks like mold in your home or business give us a call! We’ll come out and take care of the problem. Call us at 916-525-1241 for 24/7 emergency service.

The US EPA provides many details on their website around mold and moisture.

Take a look at some of their tips:

  • When water leaks or spills occur indoors - act quickly. If wet or damp materials or areas are dried 24-48 hours after a leak or spill happens, in most cases mold will not grow.
  • Clean and repair roof gutters regularly.
  • Make sure the ground slopes away from the building foundation, so that water does not enter or collect around the foundation.
  • Keep air conditioning drip pans clean and the drain lines unobstructed and flowing properly.
  • Keep indoor humidity low. If possible, keep indoor humidity below 60 percent (ideally between 30 and 50 percent) relative humidity. Relative humidity can be measured with a moisture or humidity meter, a small, inexpensive ($10-$50) instrument available at many hardware stores.
  • If you see condensation or moisture collecting on windows, walls or pipes act quickly to dry the wet surface and reduce the moisture/water source. Condensation can be a sign of high humidity.

5 Quick Tips to Prepare for Water Damage

4/11/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage can happen in many ways, it's good to be prepared.

Water damage at home or in your place of business does not need to be a traumatic experience. Consider these 5 tips to better prepare.

Storm Damage Water Preparedness

10/31/2018 (Permalink)

10/27/2017

Storms, emergencies and disasters can happen anytime, and you and your family may not be together when one occurs. It is wise to make plans now so you can contact each other when a disaster occurs.

Sacramentoready.org has compiled a list of information you need when putting together your communication plan:

Contact information

  • Make sure each family member carries a cell phone or coins or a phone card so they can make a call.
  • In some emergency situations it may be easier to make a long distance than a local call.Designate an out-of-town contact who can communicate among separated members. Be sure your contact has information for each member of your family.
  • Give each person a contact card with names and phone numbers of other family members. The list should also include the out-of-town contact information. Have each person carry the card in their wallet, purse, or backpack at all times.
  • Give a copy of your contact information to your child’s school to keep on file.
  • Include a copy of your contact information in your family’s emergency kit.

Preparing children

  • Talk to your child about how and when to call 9-1-1.
  • Identify safe places for children and teens to go if they are not at school or with your family in an emergency. These might include a friend’s home, fire or police station, library, or place of worship. Make sure your children know how to find these safe places.
  • Make sure small children know their phone number and address and your name.

Reuniting with family members

  • Designate two places for family members to meet in the event of an emergency.
  • Choose a location close by (for example, the street light in front of a nearby home). Instruct family members to meet there if they can do so safely in situations where only your home or the immediate area is affected.
  • Choose another spot outside of the immediate area (for example, in front of a grocery store). This could be used when an emergency affects a larger area and your family members cannot get home safely.
  • Use your family’s communication plan to contact each other about your location, if possible.

Water Damage--How to Clean Contaminated Needles

9/27/2018 (Permalink)

biohazard clean up, needle clean up, disposal of sharp needles

    • The use of engineering and work practice controls provide the highest degree of control in order to eliminate potential injuries after performing blood draws.

Preparing for a Flood and the Appropriate Responses

9/21/2018 (Permalink)

OSHA's website has a plethora of information. Being prepared for a flood and knowing how to respond is vital. Many think about their homes but not their businesses. Review OSHA's guidelines:

Planning

Having an evacuation plan in place before a flood occurs can help avoid confusion and prevent injuries and property damage. A thorough evacuation plan should include:

  • Conditions that will activate the plan
  • Chain of command
  • Emergency functions and who will perform them
  • Specific evacuation procedures, including routes and exits
  • Procedures for accounting for personnel, customers and visitors
  • Equipment for personnel
  • Review the plan with workers

    • The use of engineering and work practice controls provide the highest degree of control in order to eliminate potential injuries after performing blood draws.

Prepare for Water Damage – 5 Quick Tips

5/8/2017 (Permalink)

Water damage at home or in your place of business does not need to be a traumatic experience. Consider these 5 tips to better prepare.

Remodeling after fire damage

5/22/2016 (Permalink)

If you are faced with fire damage, call SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom at 916-987-0400 for 24/7 emergency service.

Dealing with water or fire damage can stressful. Hopefully, you have had a chance to work with SERVPRO of Fair Oaks/Folsom to get you through that trying time. However, when it is all said and done, you may have some remodeling to do. Though it is certainly rough to deal with the damage, remodeling can be enjoyable and even fun.

According to ImproveNet.com there are quite of few things to consider when repairing after fire and smoke damage:

Average Cost of Fire and Smoke Damage Restoration and Repair

The average cost of repair and restoration services after fire and smoke damage is $2,950. The total cost that a homeowner pays for such repairs will depend on the location and extent of the damage. For example, fire damage to a kitchen may cost more to repair than damage to a closet due to the expense of replacing costly cabinets and appliances. The out of pocket amount that a homeowner pays to have fire and smoke damage repairs might be reduced by homeowner's insurance coverage.

Types of Repairs for Fire and Smoke Damage

Water used to extinguish a fire can saturate the walls and floors of the home. The water can quickly cause mold growth and wood rot if the water isn't removed and the home thoroughly dried. Soot from the fire can saturate and stain anything upholstered. Professional restoration is needed in order to salvage the furnishings as well as linens, draperies and carpet. Smoke discoloration and odors can pervade almost everything in a home, including furnishings, carpets and rugs, linens and clothing. Professional restoration is essential in order to save those items. The smoke can also damage the home's air ducts, resulting in foul odors each time the furnace or air conditioner turns on. Restoration and repair services are needed to clean the ducts before the HVAC system is used again.
