Learn a little more about mold testing or sampling from the EPA:
Is sampling for mold needed? In most cases, if visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary. Since no EPA or other federal limits have been set for mold or mold spores, sampling cannot be used to check a building's compliance with federal mold standards. Surface sampling may be useful to determine if an area has been adequately cleaned or remediated. Sampling for mold should be conducted by professionals who have specific experience in designing mold sampling protocols, sampling methods and interpreting results. Sample analysis should follow analytical methods recommended by the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), or other professional organizations.
Are there federal regulations or standards regarding mold testing? Standards or Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) for airborne concentrations of mold, or mold spores, have not been set. Currently, there are no EPA regulations or standards for airborne mold contaminants. For more information on mold visit: https://www.epa.gov/mold/mold-testing-or-sampling

SERVPRO Is Ready To Tackle Mold In Your Sacramento Home
5/13/2021 (Permalink)
Mold
Finding mold in your Sacramento house can cause you to hit the panic button. Frequently homeowners try to manage at least preliminary control of the problem before reaching out for help. That impulse, unfortunately, can complicate the situation and even accelerate the spread of the microbial infestation. Strategies commonly believed to kill mold and prevent its return can have to precisely the opposite effect. Let our mold remediation experts take on the challenge.
Mold damage in your Sacramento home needs a thorough inspection and evaluation to determine the source and plan for repair as part of our professional response to the problem. A slow leak, incompletely dried spill, or even higher than normal interior humidity can encourage mold growth. These conditions can lie hidden, but our technicians are adept in detecting a cause as well as certified to remediate the mold damage.
Because moisture and mold growth are so closely linked DIY diluted bleach treatments often only lighten the staining while feeding the mold, the water in the bleach solution aiding in microbial growth without the bleach reaching deeply enough to kill the mold. Instead of topical treatments alone, SERVPRO uses the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mold remediation protocol.
We determine the extent of the mold damage and design the best containment strategy for your space. Heavy plastic sheeting augmented with air scrubber technology employing negative pressure to seal off the moldy space keeps the rest of your home free of moldy debris. The SERVPRO crew wears personal protective gear to prevent tracking contaminants through your home.
We remove the mold from non-porous surfaces by scraping and brushing, collecting and bagging the debris for hazardous waste disposal. Porous materials infiltrated with mold hyphae (roots) receive a soda blasting treatment that loosens and removes the mold without damaging the infested materials. SERVPRO crews use HEPA filtered vacuums to remove the debris on the floors and surfaces. The air scrubber used for containment also clears airborne residue. To inhibit renewed mold growth, we sanitize the affected area with an EPA registered disinfectant.

Some Moldy Facts
9/15/2020 (Permalink)
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

- Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposures include allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory complaints.

- If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
- Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
- Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by:
- Venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside
- Using air conditioners and de-humidifiers
- Increasing ventilation
- Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning

- In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting (i.e., by drinking fountains, by classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).
- Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

Did you find something that looks like mold in your home or business? Let SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom ease your mind and take care of the problem. Call us at 916-525-1241 for 24/7 emergency service.
The US EPA provides many details on their website around mold and moisture.
Take a look at some of their tips:
- When water leaks or spills occur indoors - act quickly. If wet or damp materials or areas are dried 24-48 hours after a leak or spill happens, in most cases mold will not grow.
- Clean and repair roof gutters regularly.
- Make sure the ground slopes away from the building foundation, so that water does not enter or collect around the foundation.
- Keep air conditioning drip pans clean and the drain lines unobstructed and flowing properly.
- Keep indoor humidity low. If possible, keep indoor humidity below 60 percent (ideally between 30 and 50 percent) relative humidity. Relative humidity can be measured with a moisture or humidity meter, a small, inexpensive ($10-$50) instrument available at many hardware stores.
- If you see condensation or moisture collecting on windows, walls or pipes act quickly to dry the wet surface and reduce the moisture/water source. Condensation can be a sign of high humidity.

Fair Oaks and Folsom Residents! If you notice mold in your walls and ceilings, do your best not to disturb it or attempt to clean it yourself. Reason being is that mold infestation can be inadvertently spread throughout your home. When dry mold is asleep, no harm can come of it. However, when wet or moistened it comes to life and carries more active contaminants. Contamination, or mold damage needs to be contained as close to the original source as possible. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home. Let the experts, SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom, do their job. It is a process, so why not do it right! In the interim here are a few tips:
- Don’t touch the affected areas.
- Turn off the HVAC system and fans; do not attempt to dry the area yourself.
- Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
- Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.
- Contact SERVPRO of Fair Oaks / Folsom for an assessment.

The OSHA law also prohibits employers from retaliating against employees for exercising their rights under the law (including the right to raise a health and safety concern or report an injury). For more information see www.whistleblowers.gov or Workers' rights under the OSH Act.
OSHA can help answer questions or concerns from employers and workers. To reach your regional or area OSHA office, go to the OSHA Offices by State webpage or call 1-800-321-OSHA (6742).

Workers may file a complaint to have OSHA inspect their workplace if they believe that their employer is not following OSHA standards or that there are serious hazards. Workers can file a complaint with OSHA by calling 1-800-321-OSHA (6742), online via eComplaint Form, or by printing the complaint form and mailing or faxing it to the local OSHA area office.
